Fingerpicks for Dobro?
I'm really getting into this Dobro thing, and was wondering if any of you guys use different picks than the ones for pedal and other steel. I saw a picture of some plastic ones the other day. What do you guys and the people I hear on record use?
Do you guys use a different bar also? I play the Dobro on my pedal steel, so I was wondering since it's not a "true" Dobro what to use. Thanks as always guys ( and gals )........Brian

Most dobro players, myself included, use metal finger picks and a plastic thumpick. You did not mention what style dobro your playing, but I use a Scheerhorn steel for dobro and not a big ol' steel guitar bar. Of course if your basically playing steel guitar acousticaly, the big bar may work.
I think the plasic picks are made for nylon stringed players.

PS Don't milk the notes out of your dobro like you can with an electric steel. Dig in and make it work. They like it that way.
[This message was edited by Patrick Ickes on 27 January 2000 at 08:06 PM.]

My hands are large, and I need a bullet bar, so Pedal steel bars are perfect for me, also I like being able to use the same bar for everything...I've got a collection of about 10 styles of bars that I don't use, always go back to my standard, but I looked around for a while till I found what was right for ME,

I use the same fingerpicks (Kyser) on both PSG and Dobro but change the John Pearce I use w. PSG to a Goldengate for Dobro.I think I can get more volume out of the Dobro with the Golden Gate as it doesn`t "give in".Stevens and Schubb steels for Dobro (and lapsteel occasionally).
