Steel Specific Pedal Differences

Post by Tim Townley »

Does anyone know exactly what the differences are in a pedal made specifically for pedal steel as opposed to regular guitar? I have made several pedals and would like to experiment with some drive pedals to tailor them to steel and have not been able to find specific info as to the necessary modifications.

What sort of pedal are you thinking of? Delays, flangers, reverbs, compressors, envelope follwers, eq are all equally effective on pedal steel guitars and six-stringers, no steel-specific pedals are indicated. The only differences between the instruments are pickup Impedances, volume pedal use and the resulting sustain.

Brad Sarno's Steel Guitar Black Box and various Impedance matching devices that improve or tune the frequency response curve from pickups with Impedance in the 20k range might provide a direction for you to investigate

The big difference is the output from the pickup(s), as pedal steel pickups can put out several times the voltage of guitar pickups.
