Fishing pal seat for pedal steel? Anyone tried it?
Hi all
So can’t afford a pak seat in the UK, so can anyone dissuade me for getting one of these?

There are different makes and varieties and they go for buttons second hand? Anyone used one for steel? Why not?

Looks like a great idea, as long as you can get it to the right height.
Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40

Aloha Martin,
I am not familiar with that Fishing pal seat. That said, try it out and if it works, it works!
I have this folding chair. It's quite nice because it folds flat, and you can easily adjust the height of the seat.

I first found out about that chair from a Bass player buddy who played upright bass. He found it on a "Bird Watching" website. It was listed as a "Bird Watching Chair".
I guess enough upright bass players found out about it and now it's a "Bass player's chair". lol.
That said, it's quite handy if you want to play seated in a standing position. The seat slides almost all the way up to the top of the back rest.
Conversely, you can move the seat to a low seated position as pictured.
Enjoy!

That seat box looks pretty similar to what steelers use. My only concern would be the height. I'm not sure what the description means where it reads 61 centimeters [24 in.] with the back raised. It that means 24 inches from the floor to top of cushion, that's a little taller than the average steel seat.
The standard height is 21 inches or 53+ centimeters. I see it has adjustable feet but it appears they only extend the height.
Price looks pretty good new and if you can find one used for less as you mention, that seems to be a nice alternative. Just need to see if the height would be acceptable for you.
Depending on how they attach and how handy you are with tools, those legs could possibly be cut down as necessary. Can't really see how they attach.
[EDIT:] If you zoom in on this photo you can see that the legs adjust via spring loaded detent pins....cool...so maybe one could drill additional holes further down the leg.

I spent a lot of time in the world of astronomy and many people would use a variable seat height device for Newtonian telescopes, where the eyepiece is on the top of the tube. The one made of tubular steel (as shown) is one variation. I only mention this for the sake of those thinking of poking around in unlikely places for such a seat. Yard sales?

I just use a folding stool designed for keyboards. I don't need a backrest.
I tried a Pakaseat once but didn't like it.

Michael K's bass player/astronomer/birding chair is a Vestil CPRO-800, and their models 200, 600 and 600S are similar. https://www.vestil.com/product.php?FID=346#Matrix

I use a ROC-N-SOC drum throne that has a hydraulic lift to adjust the height. .

Wow, cool! I had no idea who the original manufacturer was until now, and I've had this chair for years! How about a one legged milking stool. I'm familiar with those.

Well, I have to say that I was interested enough in your idea that I cycled out to a Decathlon near me. Never been to one before and .... well it reminded me of the "Toys-R-Us" stores from the 90's! I actually had to dodge a ball kicked by an unsupervised child! Although said ball achieved a fine trajectory of approx. 6 feet, the general quality of other products was quite shoddy, mostly own brands, made in far-east. I cycle and tent-camp a lot and I wouldn't buy here.
I checked their fishing section but my local store's sortiment ended with wet -weather gear; they didn't even have rods and nets so sadly I cannot comment on the chair.
If you order one on-line, you'll have 2 weeks to break it in!
Do let us know what you get.

Re: Fishing pal seat for pedal steel? Anyone tried it?
UPDATE!! I’ve been scouting Facebook marketplace place for a while, waiting for a good one to come up. A couple of weeks ago I picked one up at a carboot sale - a British thing that’s like a flea market but unhinged. Everybody loads their cars up full of junk at 4am, drives to a field in the middle of nowhere for 5am, opens their boots (trunks) and lets everyone have at it. By 11am, people are basically giving it all away. Anyway, I picked up tatty old fishing seat for £4 and it’s a dream! Adjustable to any hight, very solid, comfortable, lightweight, loads of storage space. Doesn’t even smell of fish or fishing. I thought it would be a ‘proof of concept tester’, but I see no reason to change it. Gunna see if I can catch me some sweet steel slider licks!

Very good Martin. Did you get the Caperlan like in the photo I posted? How do you evaluate it for quality etc.? Glad you got a good deal on it.
FYI, many of us know boot is the word over there for the car trunk. Folks down south, at least in North Carolina where i spent some time, use many Brit based terms and have a little bit of the accent.
Hope all goes well.
