Speaker for vegas 400

Post by David Hawkins »

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me out. I got my first pedal steel about two years and recently acquired a proper pedal steel amp. It's a peavey vegas 400 from 1983.

The amp was in a bit of a state and the speaker in it died a smoky death today. It wasn't the original black widow one anyway.

I'm keen to save the amp and buy a new speaker for it.. and hopefully reduce the weight a little if possible.

The only speaker I've read about is the eminence tt15.

Could anyone advise me on suitable speakers for my amp?

Thanks a million 😀

I have 2 Vegas 400's I run. Both are from the 80's and have 15" Peavey Black Widows in them. They work and sound perfectly for me. I have read many people have tried other brands, some weighing much less, they found perfect as well. I would urge you to listen to many different players sound, talk to as many different players as you can, and get all the info you can. There is a wealth of experience on here, and everyone is always willing to help when they can. Look into what YOUR preferences are, less weight, more bass sound, everything. Let us see what you find. My best always.

Hi David! I put a Telonics in my Vegas and am very happy with it, much lighter, of course my Vegas has the upgrade. Good luck in the adventure.

Thanks guys, I ended up finding a tt15 in Europe so I hope that'll do the job!

By upgrades on the vegas 400 do you mean the chip swap?

I've no idea if that has been done already. Most of the chips in my amp say RCA558P J231A2. They're the 8 pin ICs.
