Brian Wilson RIP

Post by Bill McCloskey »

I guess they are coming in threes. First Sly Stone and now Brian Wilson, the true genius of pop music.

Sad day, and he died on my birthday, I love everything he did and saw him many times.

RIP Brian, time to meet up with Carl and Dennis!

Brian's work leaves an indelible, timeless mark on popular music. As my friend Barry wrote yesterday ...
He was actually a genius
He showed up in disguise as a somewhat crazy rocker
But he inspired so many shifts in music
And sounds
And compositional strategy
In creative development
In melodic interpretations
In the future of rock ‘n’ roll
In the thinking of other masters of leadership in the development of rock ‘n’ roll
And that’s just a start!
May he be doing something really swell right now!

A gorgeous lap steel version of 'God Only Knows" by my late Norwegian pal, Steinar Gregertsen. RIP Brian. RIP Steinar.

I was shocked yesterday when I heard that Brian Wilson died. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys for quite a few years, and every time I listen to their songs, it always makes me feel happy! A few years ago, I was watching the Grand Ole Opry when Circle TV used to show it on Saturday nights, and the Beach Boys were on there, along with Lorrie Morgan, and Brian was singing with the band and Lorrie when they performed "Don't Worry Baby", which The Beach Boys released in May of 1964. In 1996, Brian and the band recorded the song again, with Lorrie Morgan on lead vocals. I wish I could've seen the Beach Boys live in concert and heard Brian singing the songs live.

I actually got to meet Brian Wilson back in 1968-69 time frame. He and the band used to come to Manitou Springs, Co. ever summer for about a month and play a venue in or near Manitou Springs, Co. At the time I did not know who he was or anything about him. He brought his new Lincoln Cont. into the Mercury Dealership for service while he was here and I wrote his service repair order. I think he came at least two years in a row. Wish I had had more knowledge of who he and the band was at the time. I think the club was called the Hideaway. Long time ago now.

That was really great, Andy. Thanks for sharing. I met Brian in 1990 when I was 15 years old. Looking back, the whole experience seems almost surreal.

Wow. It’s as if your friend Steinar had a premonition of how we would all feel. It’s like a requiem, while still capturing every last ounce of the song’s essence. Thanks for posting, Andy. Really truly, thanks!
