Ay, if you weren’t there, it would be difficult to relate the volume and depth of the cacophony. The trenches were only yards apart. They’d start in the wee hours with their banjo jokes, and we’d retort with slurs on the accordion. At dawn, they hit us with Lady of Spain, but we rallied back with Foggy Mountain Breakdown. It went on like that for days.

I was rooting for the accordions.
Actually, I 'd just seen a documentary that covered the banjo's roots in Africa. It's initial use was within the slave community, and later spread,
It fell out of favor due to its being co-opted by minstrel shows. Just another good reason b0b tried to abandon it.
