Announcement about steel guitar workshops
Hey everyone! I have an announcement to make about monthly workshops, if you have a few minutes to check it out.
https://youtu.be/IkZr0Gzb1v0?si=zYAXSvAcNwDWSF-o
I’m really excited about this. I have several workshops already planned out and they all tie together. The first few workshops will be delving into harmony, harmonizing a melody, slanting, and leading up to chord melody playing, and improvising using chords.
After that, I have a lot of other interesting topics I want to cover. I won’t be confined to any one or two styles of playing, but will consider this an opportunity for me to share my depth of knowledge in a lot of styles / on a lot of topics.
I hope you’ll be inclined to check it out!

Sounds great Mike. One question, is this geared towards mainly c6 as most schooling seems to be? I tend to use a6 and/or e7. Anyway thanks for helping folks, John

Re: Announcement about steel guitar workshops
John, I use C6, it’s true, but much of what I will be talking about/presenting is applicable to A6. It is really the 6th tuning itself that is a common link. This series of workshops is essentially me sharing my approach to playing, from technique to the essentials of harmony, melody, etc., all culminating in how I arrange pieces, improvise—just about anything I can think of.John Harmon wrote: 16 Oct 2025 11:41 am Sounds great Mike. I encourage folks to keep a notebook handy because there won’t be any printouts. I am really looking forward to this and have been preparing for a while now. Make sure you sign up, because I will be sending out a link when the episode drops.

Looking forward to it. Is it going to be a live Zoom meeting, or a recording on YouTube? Having signed up, will I have unlimited access? Thanks. Bruce

Re: Announcement about steel guitar workshops
I’ve decided to call this series “A Different Slant” and I just dropped the first episode today.
I had pre-recorded one last night that was well prepared and all, only to find out that there were audio issues. So today I essentially just did another, kind of winging it. It came out pretty well but I expect things to really take shape in coming episodes, including a lot of playing. I am working on incorporating BIAB and other media.
Thanks to everyone who subscribed!

Re: Announcement about steel guitar workshops
Thank you, everyone! I have been working on improving all aspects of the show and I really think I’ve made some really good progress. Thanks to Mike Kiese for pushing me to get the orientation of the overhead neck cam correctly aligned with the under-the-neck shot. I think in coming episodes the difference will be night and day. Also fixed the audio and I now have a live whiteboard to add tab and diagrams to. Overall, it is much better.Lee Rider wrote: 25 Oct 2025 2:22 pm Been working through the first workshop and really enjoying it. You were born to teach!
Next episode will be dropping first week of November.
