Buddy Cage in 1967

Post by scott murray »

discovered this album recently featuring Buddy Cage, along with Mickey McGivern & the Mustangs with Billy Adams on vocals. mostly country standards of the day and a few originals as well. Buddy is certainly cooking and plays a little C6 on King of the Road

from the liner notes:
BUDDY CAGE at the tender age of 21 is considered one of North America's No. 1 steel lead guitarists. Buddy, a Torontonian, demonstrates why on this recording.

and here's a link to the Shorty Masters Sings Ernest Tubb album from a year or 2 later, also featuring Buddy and Mickey McGivern.

Amazing find !! Thanks. I read in an interview that he played a Fender 400 before getting the Emmons. The 1967 Micky McGivern record doesn’t sound Emmons push pull to my ears. Can anyone confirm?

Anyhow good stuff!! Thanks for sharing this rare find,

**edited to say after listening on real speakers ( and not an iPhone )it’s most likely the Emmons! **

In an interview with Buddy he mentions having the Fender 400 and being inspired by Ralph Mooney! That makes me happy! 😃

so much reverb on everything that its hard to tell.. I would be of the opinion that its not a 400, only because I heard stuff that sounded like Buddy's ethereal use of the top 2 chromatic strings.. I guess he could have had a 400 and tuned it to the top 8 of a typical E9 tuning like we use today.. Maybe he was using a 10 string Fender by this time??.. Just didn't sound like a Fender to me really, although I also realize the later Fender 400 with the improved changer/bridge/nut,cast pedals/sunburst finish/Jaguar pickups had a different sound than the earlier ones w/Jazzmaster pickups/stringbreaker changer etc. It is an interesting question...
I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

no gear list for me.. you don't have the time......
